Respiratory FAQs

The four types of respiration are:

  • Pulmonary Ventilation which is commonly referred to as breathing. It is the process of air flowing into the lungs during inhalation and exhalation.
  • External respiration which is the exchange of gases between the external environment and the bloodstream.
  • Transport which is the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and tissue
  • Internal respiration which describes the gas exchange between the bloodstream and the tissues. 

Doctors and medical respiratory consultants diagnose and treat conditions that affect the breathing system such as the throat, nose, larynx, lungs and windpipe. 

During your respiratory appointment, you may be asked to have some tests such as breathing tests or chest x-rays. You medical consultant will as you questions about your symptoms and once your examination is complete, the consultant will discuss their findings and share the results with you.
