He is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians. In 2001, he became Senior Rheumatologist at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford; in 2002 Clinical Director of Medicine. He is the Oxford Region College Advisor for Rheumatology for the British Society of Rheumatology. Joell has numerous peer-reviewed publications. His special interests include inflammatory joint diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and the connective tissue diseases. An honorary Senior Lecturer at Oxford University and is actively involved in the teaching of both under-graduate and post-graduate medical students.
