Rhys Thomas is a fellowship-trained specialist in surgery of the adult foot and ankle. He is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales and Cardiff and Vale Orthopaedic Centre. Rhys underwent medical school training at University College Hospital, London and orthopaedic surgical training in South Wales. Following his general orthopaedic training Mr Thomas undertook a 12 month fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the prestigious University of Toronto, Canada. Such training and continuing professional development in the field has led to Mr Thomas being the only surgeon in the UK to have been awarded fellowships by both the European and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Societies. As a result his patients benefit from an experienced knowledge base and the use of modern, recognized techniques. Rhys regularly treats professional sports people and elite athletes with foot and ankle problems. He sees patients from a wide variety of disciplines, including Olympic athletes. He acts as honorary surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union, Cardiff Blues and Cardiff City and also regularly treats rugby players from the other Welsh regions and English Guinness Premiership. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK and has set up the South Wales sports medicine forum.
