Mr Mahbub (Mabs) Alam was appointed a consultant in trauma & orthopaedic surgery at Barking, Redbridge & Havering Hospitals NHS Trust in April 2014. He grew up in Bethnal Green and read Medicine at University College London, receiving a Goldsmith’s Guild Scholarship, and also captained the hockey team. After gaining BSc (Hon) and MBBS degrees, his initial surgical training included the surgical rotation at Bart’s and the London Hospitals, where he developed his passion for orthopaedics, knee surgery and sports injuries. He worked at professorial units at the Royal London and Charing Cross hospitals. On gaining membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Mr Alam went on to complete a Master of Surgery (MS) research degree in Biomechanics and Bioengineering at Imperial College London, receiving awards from the Arthritis Research Campaign, the Royal College of Surgeons and the Hammersmith Hospitals Trustees. This research degree involved developing and validating a novel measuring device for diagnosing and monitoring knee ligament injuries - including the ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL & PLC complex. The device is pending patent and continues to be utilised to aid the treatment of knee ligament injuries. During this period, Mr Alam published in international journals on topics related to knee injuries, knee diagnosis, computer navigated surgery and total knee replacement biomechanics and bioengineering. Mr Alam was then appointed to the NE Thames (RLH) orthopaedic & trauma rotation. After being awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery in 2012, Mr Alam was appointed to the Specialist Register. He then completed the knee and lower limb trauma fellowship at University Hospitals Southampton (UHS), having been trained in all aspects of knee surgery, particularly complex and revision ACL and multi-ligament surgery, unicompartmental knee resurfacing/replacement and revision knee replacements. The University Hospitals Southampton Knee Unit is the UK centre for the European Knee Fellowship. Mr Alam has also completed visiting fellowships to the USA, UAE, Italy and South Africa.
