Mr Duncan Learmonth was appointed as an orthopaedic knee and shoulder consultant surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 1993. In 2004 he established the Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic at the Priory Hospital with Marcus Green and Samir Massoud. He transferred to full time private practice in 2007, but maintains an Honorary NHS Contract at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and the title of Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. Mr Learmonth is an established authority in knee and shoulder surgery in the UK. He is a regular faculty member at national meetings and teaches at Regional Orthopaedic Training Programs in Oswestry, Sheffield, Leicester, Cardiff, Cambridge and Birmingham. He is a regular demonstrator in arthroscopic surgery workshops of the knee and shoulder for UK and overseas consultant orthopaedic surgeons. Mr Learmonth has previously been a surgical tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has also been invited guest speaker at the Norwegian, Greek and Egyptian Orthopaedic Association Meetings. He has published some thirty papers on knee and shoulder conditions, and has contributed to book chapters on knee trauma and articular cartilage disease. The development of the Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic has been a long time ambition of Mr Learmonth's as it helps patients and referring practitioners to identify surgeons with subspecialty expertise. The clinic’s educational evenings and web site have proved a great success with referring practioners; future plans include extending educational programmes and expanding the clinic base.
