Mrs Nitu Bajekal has trained extensively in obstetrics and gynaecology in both India and in the United Kingdom. Since May 2001, she has been a consultant at Barnet & Chase Farm NHS Trust, active in all areas of the hospital and her specialist practice. She is actively involved in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery (keyhole minimal access surgery) and is the clinical lead for a number of gynaecological conditions. She runs national and international courses and workshops on topics in obstetrics and gynaecology. Outside of her own practice, she is driven by medical education - particularly training and supervising future obstetricians and gynaecologists. Mrs Bajekal received the 'Top Teacher Award' for 2009/2010 by University College Medical School, London for her contribution to teaching and medical education. Mrs Bajekal is the first gynaecologist in North London to have trained and successfully performed the first case in robotic assisted gynaecological surgery. Robotic assisted keyhole surgery has several benefits for patients over conventional open surgery with less blood loss, better vision and quicker recovery. She is now offering this surgery to all suitable complex gynaecological procedures and for treatment of early endometrial cancer. In 2005, Mrs Bajekal helped set up an RCOG recognised Part 2 MRCOG course in Pune, India. She lectures on this course once a year, which now runs efficiently wiith organisers and consultants in India. The course has developed extremely useful links with busy hospitals in India and in the UK and acts as an avenue trainees can explore to widen their experience. As an invited speaker with Conference Plus, she lectures to gynaecologists in India as well as GPs all over the world on various gynaecological topics.
