Dr Tariq Ahmad was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist to the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust in 2007. He qualified from Bristol University in 1992 and became a mem- ber of the Royal College of Physicians in 1995 and Fellow in 2011. He completed higher spe- cialist training in gastroenterology in Oxford where he developed particular interests in luminal gastroenterology, including inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disease (including irritable bowel syndrome), coeliac disease and nutrition. Dr Ahmad was awarded a D.Phil from Oxford University in 2003 for his research into genetics of IBD and remains active in this field through his work at the Penisula Medical School. Dr Ahmad leads the Exeter Inflammatory Bowel Disease service and is an author of the 2010 UK management guidelines. Dr Ahmad is a medical advisor to the national patient group, Crohn’s and Colitis UK and the current medical editor of the patient newsletter. Dr Ahmad also leads the Exeter multidisciplinary nutrition team which delivers specialist care to patients with gut failure. Dr Ahmad specilises in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy of both the upper and lower GI tracts (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) and undertakes a range of procedures including: polypectomy, and submucosal resection, banding of varices, PEG insertion, NJ tube insertion, Argon Plasma Coagulation Oesophageal dilation and emergency treatment of GI Haemorrhage.
