I graduated with BSc (Hons) and MBBS from St Thomas's Hospital Medical School, London, in 1989. I then undertook general surgical training at St Mary's Hospital, London and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1993. I was awarded an MD from London University in 1997 for work in the USA on xenotransplantation. My cardiothoracic surgical training took place at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, Frenchay Hospital and the Bristol Royal Infirmary in Bristol, and Duke University Medical Centre in the USA. I was also the Hunterian Professor of Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I am experienced in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery (including coronary artery bypass grafts and heart valve surgery).
