Dr Ian Purcell
Primary Specialism:
Cardiology
Education:
My training and experience encompasses all aspects of general cardiology and I also offer subspeciality expertise in chest pain, coronary artery disease, percutaneous coronary intervention (angioplasty and stenting) as well as heart failure and cardiomyopathies. My grounding in cardiology was gained at the Freeman Hospital before I was awarded a British Heart Foundation research fellowship to the National Heart and Lung Institute in London. My research was in heart failure, cardiomyopathy and troponin and allowed me to work clinically with the recognised leaders in these fields. I trained in coronary angioplasty with figures of international renown at the Royal Brompton Hospital and St George’s Hospital, London. My NHS appointment is at the Freeman Hospital, where I have been a consultant in general and interventional cardiology since 2002. My clinical practice covers all aspects of cardiac disease with special interest in the diagnosis and therapy of coronary artery and cardiac muscle disease. I am also Clinical Director of Heart and Lung Services at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust.
